Friday 27 February 2004
Today everything was the same, including feeling something was in my eye. The good news was I received notice of my appointment to see a specialist at the Royal Cornwall Hospital - it was to be on Monday - 3 days time.

Thursday 26 February 2004
I heard that my latest sample taken in last week was ok.
My knees and right hand were still not bending properly and my knees continued to feel bruised.
I also now seemed to have something in my right eye, which I tried to remove by the usual methods but to no avail.

As well as not being able to move my knees much, they also felt painful today, like they were bruised.

I spoke to Dr.D today about absence certificates and while on the phone I mentioned I wasn't improving at all. He advised I should take in a new sample the next day.

Friday 13th - Wednesday 18th February 2004
All these days were very much the same, which is why I've grouped them altogether. There was no change to either of my legs or my right hand.
I was still taking the latest batch of tablets - waiting for them to start doing something, and also waiting to hear from the hospital about when my appointment would be.
Two things that were particularly difficult to do were actually sitting down and standing up, and
I literally had to 'fall' onto whatever I wanted to sit on!
As standing for a shower would be awkward I decided to have a bath instead. Luckily there is a wide enough tiled shelf behind my bath so I cleared it off and sat on that, then swung my legs over the bath and slid down into the water.
The trouble came when I wanted to get myself out again. I thought I would slide back up onto the shelf and do it all in reverse. This didn't quite work though, as I needed to press with my hands on the bath sides first to take my weight. I couldn't press with my right hand so I only had my left hand to use. Not thinking I would need as much pressure as I did, I failed to press hard enough, and as I slid up to the shelf, my hand gave way, and not being able to stop myself because of my knees, I rapidly dropped back down into the bath, sending a whole load of water all over the bathroom floor and up the wall!
Despite everything, it was really funny!

Following the latest blood test result I had an appointment at the surgery with Dr.B. I don't think I will ever forget him asking me again 'where it hurts' and saying 'Well, I don't know what it is!'
I wondered just how I was supposed to react to that? I wish I knew then of all the websites that mentioned similar symptoms, then I could have told him!
At this point he prescribed some more tablets, and sent off a request to the hospital for an appointment for me to see a specialist.

Not much change today but I would be going to see Dr. B again tomorrow as the results of my latest blood test would be known.

No change today, but here are a few things it was really hard to do with my right hand as it was:
1. Opening a can - I would position the opener on the right of the can and leave it there, then press down on the lid with my right elbow to hold it still. The I'd reach round with my left hand to wind the opener!
2. Washing my left hand!
3. Cutting my left hand's fingernails - maybe I should have bitten them!
4. Peeling vegetables - It was impossible to peel left-handed so I actually had to do this with a vegetable knife, taking off much more peel than I would normally.
5. Write!

Next part of me to go bad is my left Ankle! It felt like a sprain, which I put down to not using my left leg properly because of the knee. Since my Right knee went stiff on Thursday, I was probably sharing the strain and re-using my left leg a little, making the ankle work for the first time in three weeks!
My right hand also decided to become very stiff again today after easing off a little a week ago.
I had a visit today from a friend, Geoff, who was visiting the UK. He moved away from the area a few years before, and invited me over to see him and his mate in June - in Italy!

So it's now three weeks since my left knee and right hand started becoming stiff and swollen, and I was told at first that it may last up to two weeks. Also, I wasn't even taking any medication for it anymore.
However, today things were about to take another turn for the worse, because now my Right knee was also starting to become stiff and swollen. Up to now I had been able to limp around having one good leg, but with both knees now not bending or straightening properly, it would be almost impossible to walk, and even to just stand to do ordinary tasks like washing up etc were to become painful and awkward. I started to think back to the days I would run around the streets and the time I finished in the top quarter of the runners at the Helston 5K race, not that many years earlier. And one of my best hobbies in the summer was walking along the Cornish coastline.
Now I can't even stand properly.
I wondered how long it would be before my left hand joined in. Not a good day!

I went to the surgery for another blood test. The Doc said it would be best not to start any more tablets until the result was known, which would be about a week.

I phoned Dr.B again because the tablets I was taking ran out and I was no better yet. He told me to come in tomorrow for another blood test to try and find out why.
